Understanding Color Vision Deficiency and Military Service
Color vision defect takes place if someone has a problem to distinguish between specific colors, more often than not red and green lights. This restriction can limit the jobs available for military service; like those that depend on precise color identification (for example, distinguishing red from or difficulty telling blue from green).
Some military positions are critical on color vision tasks and a routine color vision test is usually performed during the MEPS phase. The now standard normal color vision perception test determines whether a candidate meets the color vision standards appropriate for certain military occupational fields.
The military has certain requirements for color vision that are more stringent in some roles, or certain specialized jobs like aviation or navigation or an army special operations unit. Although, for the general 70% of army jobs that do not require perfect color perception a Color Vision Deficient candidate can still join a branch and excel at numerous other careers.
Military Entrance Processing Station Testing
The Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) includes color vision testing as part of a battery of tests to determine potential recruits' fitness for duty in particular military branches. Have color-impaired examination results and they will be tested during the process in other methods of color vision testing methods, Ie Farnsworth Lantern Test or Cone Contrast Test. These color test tests can measure normal color vision or diagnose a less common type of partial to total color blindness either.
It's important to do the color vision testing to know whether they have partial or full colorblindness at MEPS because some jobs in the military require normal and measuring color vision standards especially for certain occupational positions or those that need to detect and read colored signals. For example, military law enforcement, an air control position and some specific military occupational specialties will partially color blind and necessitate exact color vision standards.
