Smile for Success: The Impact of a Photo on Your Mortgage Broker Resume

The inclusion of a photograph on a Mortgage Broker's CV is not a compulsory requirement. The decision to incorporate a photo is entirely personal. If you opt to include a picture, there are certain guidelines to adhere to:

  • The photo should exude professionalism (avoid using casual photos such as beach pictures, selfies, etc.)
  • The size of the photo should be rectangular (ideally 6.5 cm in length by 4.5 cm in width)

Past eras saw the norm of resumes being submitted with the candidate's photo. However, in today's recruitment process, having your best photo on your CV does not hold much relevance. There's no prohibition from adding your photo to your CV, but it's crucial to understand that the majority of hiring managers do not prioritize applicants who include a photo on their resume.

If you decide to integrate your photo, ensure it gives off a professional vibe.

The photo question:

It's not mandatory. This indicates that it is perfectly acceptable to submit a CV without a photo. However, if you choose to incorporate one, adhere to the following rules:

  • Opt for a neutral background
  • Either face the camera directly or from a three-quarters angle
  • Ensure the photo is focused on the face
  • The photo should be rectangular in format (6.5 cm by 4.5 cm)

Highlighting Your Relevant Experiences on a Mortgage Broker Resume

Crafting Your Experience Section for a Mortgage Broker Resume

The experience section of a Mortgage Broker's CV is pivotal, as it demonstrates the candidate's practical application of their skills in the field. It offers potential employers an overview of the individual's career journey, illustrating their progression, key achievements, and suitability for the role. This section provides a snapshot of the candidate's competencies, lending prowess, customer service aptitude, and industry knowledge specific to mortgage brokerage.

  • Chronological Order: Arrange your work experiences in reverse chronological order. This means the most recent job should be at the top. This allows potential employers to see your current skills and responsibilities first. For instance, "Mortgage Broker, XYZ Company, 2017-Present" followed by "Assistant Mortgage Broker, ABC Company, 2015-2017".
  • Contract Dates: Clearly state the commencement and conclusion dates of each role. This provides an understanding of your tenure in each position, demonstrating your stability and commitment. For example, "Mortgage Broker, XYZ Company, January 2017 – Present".
  • Job Title: Accurately state your job title as it provides insight into your level of responsibility. For instance, "Senior Mortgage Broker" implies more experience and responsibility than "Junior Mortgage Broker".
  • Bulleted List: Use bullet points when describing your responsibilities and achievements in each role. This makes your CV easy to read and allows employers to quickly identify your skills. For example, under your job title, list responsibilities like "Negotiated loan terms with clients" or "Successfully closed over $5M in residential mortgages".
  • Job Description: Provide a concise but comprehensive description of your role. Highlight key responsibilities and achievements that align with the role you are applying for. For example, "Managed a diverse portfolio of clients, successfully negotiating and closing high-value mortgage deals that consistently met company targets".
  • Use of Key Words: Integrate industry-specific keywords and jargon that potential employers might be looking for. This could include terms like "loan origination", "mortgage underwriting", "risk management", or "financial advising". This not only highlights your industry knowledge but also helps your CV get noticed in automated applicant tracking systems.

  • Include any academic qualifications related to the field, such as a degree in finance, economics, or business.
  • Discuss any internships or work experience, even if they are not directly related to being a mortgage broker. Highlight skills gained that could apply to the role, such as communication, analysis, or customer service.

  • Remain positive and confident when discussing your CV and lack of experience, turning it into a strength by emphasizing your fresh perspective and eagerness to learn.

Emphasizing the Importance of Education in Your Mortgage Broker Resume

Highlighting Your Educational Background in a Mortgage Broker Resume

The education section of a Mortgage Broker's CV is significant as it outlines the foundational knowledge and training that the broker has in the field. It provides potential employers with a clear understanding of the broker's academic qualifications and the extent of their expertise in areas such as finance, economics, real estate, and business administration. The education section can also indicate any specialized training or certifications that the broker may have, which can be beneficial in the mortgage brokerage industry.

While a degree is not necessarily a strict requirement to become a Mortgage Broker, having a degree in fields such as business, finance, or economics can certainly be advantageous. It can make the broker more competitive in the job market, and provide them with a deeper understanding of the financial and economic factors that can influence the mortgage industry. In some cases, employers may prefer or require candidates to have a degree. Therefore, including this information in the CV is crucial.

Prioritizing Your Educational Background for a Mortgage Broker Resume

For a Mortgage Broker's CV, it is often beneficial to begin with the 'Education' section, particularly if the individual has a strong educational background directly related to the mortgage or finance industry. This profession demands an in-depth understanding of financial and mortgage concepts, thus a degree in finance, economics, business, or a related field can significantly enhance the candidate's appeal. Furthermore, certain certifications, such as the Certified Mortgage Broker designation, are often required and thus should be prominently displayed.

However, the positioning of the 'Education' section on a Mortgage Broker's CV can depend on the specific job offer and the candidate's profile. For instance, if a candidate has extensive professional experience in mortgage brokering, it might be more beneficial to start with the 'Professional Experience' section. This allows the candidate to immediately highlight their practical skills, past client experiences, and successful mortgage deals, providing tangible proof of their capability in the role.

In contrast, a recent graduate applying for a mortgage broker position may not have a wealth of relevant work experience but has acquired a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base through their education. In this case, it would be advisable to place the 'Education' section first to highlight their degree and any relevant coursework or certifications. This emphasizes their theoretical knowledge and preparedness for the role, despite their lack of practical experience.
